Description
The ground cherry is related to the Cape gooseberry, but it bears earlier and more abundant fruit. The small, orange berries smell of pineapple and have a mildly aromatic taste, regardless of whether they are freshly eaten or turned into compote or jam.
Our tips:
- Requires loose, humus-rich soil
- Excellent for pot cultivation
- Prick out after the seedlings have developed two or three leaves
- Plant out after the last frost
- Before growing outdoors, dig through the soil and remove weeds
- Due to the mild climate, it is ideal for wine-growing areas
- For a particularly bushy growth, pinch out the young shoots
- Make sure there is an adequate water supply
- Harvest the fruit around seven to eight weeks after flowering
- Berries fall off the bush when they are ripe
- The berries can be stored in the lanterns at a maximum of 15°C for several weeks
- Medium consumer of fertiliser
- Suitable for balconies
- Strong seeds
- Good neighbours: beets, strawberries, fennel, onions, cabbages, lettuce, beans
- Bad neighbours: cucumbers, nightshade family
