Bionana Ground Cherry Organic Physalis

The ground cherry is related to the Cape gooseberry, but it bears earlier and more abundant fruit. The small, orange berries smell of pineapple and have a mildly aromatic taste, regardless of whether they are freshly eaten or turned into compote or jam.

Our tips:

• Requires loose, humus-rich soil
• Excellent for pot cultivation
• Prick out after the seedlings have developed two or three leaves
• Plant out after the last frost
• Before growing outdoors, dig through the soil and remove weeds
• Due to the mild climate, it is ideal for wine-growing areas
• For a particularly bushy growth, pinch out the young shoots
• Make sure there is an adequate water supply
• Harvest the fruit around seven to eight weeks after flowering
• Berries fall off the bush when they are ripe
• The berries can be stored in the lanterns at a maximum of 15°C for several weeks
• Medium consumer of fertiliser
• Suitable for balconies
• Strong seeds
• Good neighbours: beets, strawberries, fennel, onions, cabbages, lettuce, beans
• Bad neighbours: cucumbers, nightshade family
• Crop rotation: 4 years
