Saflax Bonsai - Red Japanese Maple

With its semicircular crown and graceful shape, the red Japanese maple is a particularly popular outdoor bonsai. In autumn its dark red leaves turn crimson and the tree gets its typical appearance. Eventually it sheds its leaves in winter.

Useful information

• The red fan maple originally comes from northeast China, Japan, and Korea.

Our tips:

• Place seeds in the fridge for a week before planting to improve germination
• Cover the seed pots with foil and make holes in them so that the soil does not dry out
• Remove foil for two hours every two to three days to prevent mould growth
• Keep the potting soil moist but not wet
• Ideal germination temperature: 20 to 25°C
• Likes a sunny to partially shaded and wind-protected location
• Water frequently and evenly - avoid waterlogging
• Shallow-rooted - Roots spread widely in the topsoil
• Fertilising using a special bonsai fertiliser is recommended every four weeks from April to October
• Over winter in a sheltered, cool location without sub-zero temperatures
