Interesting Facts

  • The Ponderosa Pine is originally native to the Rocky Mountains in North America.
  • The Ponderosa Pine is the largest pine species in the world and can live for up to 500 years.
  • Its botanical name "Ponderosa" - meaning weighty - refers to its very heavy wood.

Our Tips:

  • Place the seeds in the refrigerator for one week before sowing, then soak them in a bowl of room-temperature water for 12 to 24 hours to increase the germination rate
  • Cover the cultivation containers with plastic wrap and poke holes in it so the soil does not dry out
  • Remove the wrap every two to three days for two hours to prevent mold formation
  • Keep the potting soil moist but not wet
  • Ideal germination temperature: 17 to 23°C
  • Tolerates wind well
  • Water moderately once the surface of the soil has dried out
  • Fertilizing with liquid bonsai fertiliser every four weeks from March to November is recommended
  • Outdoor overwintering recommended - protect from strong winds and direct sunlight
