Description
Also known as the Maggi herb, lovage is usually added to soups and lends a delicious flavour to recipes containing mushrooms or eggs. Its broad, pinnate leaves and golden yellow umbel flowers give off a pleasant aroma in the garden. The leaves can be used both fresh and dried and the fruits, seeds and roots of the plant can also be used in a variety of ways.
Our tips:
- Requires nutrient-rich, deep, well-drained soil
- Water regularly
- Make sure there is enough room around it
- A stake may be necessary
- If only the leaves are to be harvested, the plant should be cut back before it flowers so that it grows bushier
- Forms underground rhizomes, which can be divided for propagation
- Heavy consumer of nutrients
- True to type seeds
- Suitable for balconies
- Good neighbours: fennel, parsley
- Crop rotation: 3 to 4 years
