Description
The nettle is a jack-of-all-trades that can be used both as a medicinal plant and for teas and to flavour soups. The young plants are also suitable for use as green manure and for mulching and composting.
Our tips:
- Requires moist, nutrient-rich soil
- Self-seeds vigorously and also spreads vegetatively via root runners - putting down barriers is recommended
- Leaves taste best when tender and young
- Older parts of the plant are well suited for composting and as fertiliser - preferably before the plant bears seeds
- Heavy consumer of nutrients
- Suitable for balconies
- True to type seeds
- Good neighbours: goutweed
- Crop rotation: 4 years
